Making sense of what you pay at the pump.

About me

The person behind the price analysis.

PATRICK DE HAAN Patrick De Haan

Hi, I'm Patrick. As Head of Petroleum Analysis, I spend my days inside the data that moves gas and diesel prices, crude markets, refinery runs, inventories, and the geopolitics that ripple through all of it, and my job is to make that legible to everyone else.

That work shows up in hundreds of television and video interviews a year, in a weekly newsletter and blog, and across social platforms where I answer the questions people are actually asking: why prices moved, whether the reasons are real, and what tends to happen next. Cutting through the myths matters as much as the numbers, so I lead with data and I'm quick to concede when a critic has a fair point.

Over nearly two decades I've been cited by multiple White House administrations and have taken part in policy discussions on fuel prices and inflation. Lately I'm focused on where fuel data meets policy, commercialization, and geospatial analysis, turning proprietary price data into tools people can build on.

Focus areas

Where I spend my attention.

The beats I track daily and can speak to on short notice, from the pump all the way back to the wellhead.

01

Retail Fuel Prices

Why gas and diesel move the way they do, price cycling, seasonal swings, and the gap between the pump and the barrel.

02

Refining & Supply

Utilization, maintenance, outages, and inventories, the plumbing that decides whether supply is tight or comfortable.

03

Crude & Global Markets

OPEC+ decisions, sanctions, and conflict risk, and how a barrel priced abroad ends up in a tank at home.

04

Energy Policy

The SPR, fuel standards, and the regulatory levers that shape prices, explained without the spin.

05

Data & Analytics

Building analysis and products on top of large, real-time fuel price datasets, and commercializing them responsibly.

06

Geospatial Insight

Mapping prices, demand, and supply geographically to surface patterns a spreadsheet alone would miss.

Experience

Nearly two decades in fuel markets.

Turning energy supply and demand data into market intelligence that reporters, enterprises, and policymakers rely on.
